Man in court for killing his mother in Nyeri

A man suspected of stabbing his mother to death and critically injuring his father has been arraigned in a Nyeri court.

Boniface Maina, 35, suspected to have committed the crime at his parents' home in Mbiriri sub-location, Kieni West sub-county, did not plead to the charges as investigations were still ongoing.

Police Constable Kimathi Marete applied for two weeks to enable him to complete investigations and have the suspect's mental status determined to confirm whether he was fit to stand trial.

Mr Marete told Senior Principle Magistrate Philip Mutua that a postmortem examination was yet to be done to establish the cause of death.

Mr Maina is said to have attacked his mother, Lydia Ngina, 50, with a kitchen knife as they were having breakfast following an argument.

He is also said to have stabbed his father in the stomach when he tried to rescue his wife.

His mother died on arrival at the Tumu Tumu Mission Hospital while his father is admitted in critical condition.

Marete was saved from an angry mob by villagers who handed him to the police.

The suspect will remain in custody at Naro Moru Police Station until February 8, when the case will be mentioned.
