The holiday season has begun but we seem busier than usual. With activities stretching later into the evening, it may be a struggle to achieve the recommended eight hours of sleep. Rather than put up with comments about how tired you look, the following tips will help you brighten a tired face:

1. Banish puffy eyes

Puffy eyes can be caused by fluid retention, allergies, stress and not enough sleep. To counteract puffy eyes, put something cold over your eyes. Lightly pat some aloe vera, whether fresh or from a tube, underneath your eyes. You could also use sliced cucumber, an ice cube wrapped in a wash cloth, or a cold compress. Tea bags made from rooibos or regular tea are a good remedy to reduce puffiness.

2. Brighten your skin

A simple pampering face mask made from turmeric, or a cleansing mask made of bentonite clay will restore life to dull sleep-deprived skin. If your skin is dry, add extra loving ingredients like yoghurt or mala, cream or avocado. When washing your face, oil cleansing will also help reduce dullness by sucking out makeup residue and dust from your pores.

3. Get rid of redness

Concealer will help to reduce redness or ashiness in darker complexions. This December we are also subject to heat from our equatorial sun. Even dark skin gets sunburnt - wear a hat, slather your moisturizer and use a product with SPF.

At home, be sure to remove your make-up every night, and do a healing face mask weekly. Aloe vera is excellent for redness or fine lines from sunburn. You could also store some of your facial products, such as your toner and face cream in the fridge. To whiten your eyes, use eye drops to once or twice daily.

4. Hydrate

Water is your friend. Start early in the morning with a tall glass of lemon water. Swap caffeine drinks for herbal teas and water, to reduce dehydration of your skin. You can also invest in a small spray bottle of water or store-bought facial mists to keep refreshing your skin throughout a hot day.

This practice also helps to refresh your makeup. At night, use a heavier cream moisturizer, such as Shea butter for dry or normal skin or a moisturizing gel for oily skin.

5. Use lipstick

Even if you don’t wear make-up, lipstick works to brighten a tired complexion. A colorful lip distracts people from seeing your tired eyes. If you use eye make-up, keep it simple.

Just 10 minutes of vigorous exercise a day helps to get that youthful glow into your skin. Using extra pillows to elevate your face and sleeping on your back, will help reduce fine lines, puffiness and dark circles.
