Police have denied claims by politician Kenneth Matiba that he was ill-treated during his detention.

Joshua Waweu, an assistant commissioner of police who appeared before Justice Isaac Lenaola yesterday, said Matiba was not ill-treated.

"He was not harassed in any way by prison authorities contrary to the claims he has made," said Waweu.

He said although most prisoners slept on the floor and only a few beds were provided, Matiba was given a bed.

David Gikonyo, a supervisor at the Kenya Revenue Authority told the court that Matiba's companies owe the State Sh1.8 billion in unpaid taxes.

He said Matiba's companies could stand on their own even after his detention.

In the case, Matiba, who is seeking millions as compensation for illegal detention, claims he had a flourishing business empire of about 20 companies that were growing and able to pay their loans, but that changed once he was detained.

The case was adjourned to February 9.
