Delay of county funds may trigger unrest

The call by Council of Governors Chairman Peter Munya for the disbursement of county funds by the national government is timely. Many projects in counties are in a stand still as they entirely rely on funds from the treasury. Furthermore counties may not be able to sustain themselves because paying the staff and meeting other costs may be a hard nut to crack.

Many governors have been accused on an array of occasions for failing to live up to what voters want and develop counties. But unknown to many, financial woes have been the greatest setback in keeping devolution afloat.

Funds should thus be disbursed to counties to restore the trust from the public. Most often county leaders have been receiving backlash from the public on basis that they are corrupt and are unable to run counties as expected. Many county leaders come 2017 general elections will be voted out not because of their own making.

Let county funds be disbursed to kick start projects in our counties. We expect to see change in infrastructure, agricultural sector and economy in general. This change will only stem from national government disbursing these funds to county governments.
