Terror scare as leaflets are found in Elgeyo Marakwet

ITEN: Panic has gripped Kapsowar town and its environs after terror leaflets were circulated warning of an impending attack targeting learning institutions in the region.

The leaflets purported to have been written by the terror group, Al-Shabaab, were found yesterday morning by a teacher stuffed under the door of a local primary school.

The leaflets claimed that Al-Shabaab had members in the area who are ready to carry out attacks starting with all learning institutions in Kapsowar division, before bombing the town, colleges and universities.

The leaflets went on to say that they were angered by the Government’s announcement that it will close the Daadab refugee camp, yet Kenyan soldiers are still in Somalia.

“We are in great fear because we do not know if the leaflets were indeed written by Al-Shabaab. The police should work extra hard to secure the region,” said Joseph Cheboi, a trader in Kapsowar town.

He asked security officers to comb all lodges and guest houses and visit the said target places for beefed up security.

“Residents should enhance the ‘Nyumba kumi’ initiative and remain alert at all times so that we can nab any culprit in our midst,” said Kipsaya location chief, Moses Kitum.

Area MP William Kisang called for heightened police patrols saying the matter should not be taken lightly because, security was a pertinent issue.

“Security organs should treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves because terror attack is real in our country.

“There should be more vigilance and co-operation between the local residents and security personnel so that the culprits can be brought to book,” said the MP.

The local District Security Committee held a crisis meeting, which also included religious clerics.
