U.N. envoy to Yemen resigns

Yemen: The United Nations envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar, resigned on Wednesday, according to a U.N. statement, signalling that his effort to end fierce fighting in the country had failed.

Benomar, a veteran Moroccan diplomat, brokered a 2011 transition plan aimed at quelling political turmoil in Yemen. However, it subsequently unravelled, culminating in an ongoing Saudi-led bombing campaign against Houthi rebels allied to Iran.
