Defilement on rise, school heads warn

Secondary school principals in Trans-Nzoia County have raised concern over the high rate at which girls are dropping out of school due to defilement and early pregnancies.

The principals urged key players in the education sector to come up with appropriate measures to curb the trend.

Cosmas Nabungolo, the principal of St Anthony Boys Kitale and his colleagues said education standards in the county were under threat.

A recent survey sponsored by Trans-Nzoia Women’s Representative Janet Nangabo showed more than 200 girls dropped out of school due to sexual abuse and early pregnancies in the past four months.

Yesterday, Mr Nabungolo said the trend is worrying and asked the county and national governments to step in to tame the vice. “Rising cases of rape and defilement leading to early pregnancies are destroying the lives of our young children.

We call on security agencies to take action and stamp out the vice,” said Nabungolo.
