'Poisonous' food kills two children aged 11in Sio

Two children in Sio Port, Busia County have died and their mother and brother admitted after eating sweet potatoes alleged to be of a poisonous species. Lydia Gatwire, the mother, said a neighbour gave her cooked sweet potatoes and she shared them with her three children for lunch on Friday at around 12pm.

Damaris and Ezekiel Oduor aged 11 and eight years were pronounced dead on their way to Nangina hospital where Elvis Oduor is still admitted.

Evening meal

 “We did not have any complications and I continued with my work at the kiosk till evening when I retired and my daughter prepared ugali and fried eggs for supper. Then, the four of us started having complications. We had diarrhea, vomiting and severe headache,” Gatwire said.

His husband, who works at Bumula as a fruit vendor was informed and he immediately sent a motorbike to take them to hospital.

Florence Mercy, the daughter who prepared supper said the neighbour has been supplying them with food for over a year and cannot be linked to the death of two.
