Aden Duale wrong on education, say teachers

Teachers in Kisumu have termed the National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale's proposal on education devolution as a diversionary tactic against issues raised by teachers.

Led by area Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (Kuppet) Branch Chairman Zablon Awange, the teachers said the Constitution regards education as a central government function hence the debate to devolve it is uncalled for.

They vowed to continue with the strike until the Government addresses their salary concerns.

"This is not the time to start discussing devolution of education unless someone has a motive to water down the sector like has been witnessed in other sectors, which were devolved without proper vision," said Awange.

Duale on Saturday said the permanent solution to perennial teachers' strikes would be devolving the education function so as to let each county deal with its teachers. "If teachers from one county want to strike they do it without influencing other teachers who want to work," said Duale.

But, Awange dismissed the proposal saying teachers read mischief in the statement.
