Kajiado, Kenya: Retired President Mwai Kibaki has asked politicians to shun politics that stoke tribalism and dedicate themselves to development initiatives and unity.

Mr Kibaki faulted leaders making utterances that could divide Kenyans, saying such politicians were enemies of the country and did not add any value to Kenyans' lives.

He urged leaders to support President Uhuru Kenyatta and his administration to deliver on its promises.

Kibaki was speaking at the launch of a multi-million shilling water project in Tinga village, Kajiado West Sub-county, that will serve residents clean water.

There was excitement among more than 5,000 residents as they drank clean water straight from the taps and their animals drank from new water troughs.

The electrified borehole supplying the water was sunk by the American Millennium Water Alliance company after it identified residents' needs owing to the area's harsh climate.

Residents told The Standard that they had suffered for years walking many kilometres daily in search of water and sometimes, their animals died from thirst. Kibaki urged residents to embrace farming and not rely only on animal rearing.

He said the water department should ensure that such projects were spread throughout the country, especially in the dry areas. The retired President will today be crowned a national water ambassador by the Millennium Water Alliance.

Kajiado West MP Moses Sakuda said the project was God-sent, adding that the constituency had received Sh50 million from Millennium Water Alliance to sink more boreholes to cover the vast dry area.
