MOMBASA, KENYA: Coast senior traffic commander Martin Kariuki has warned passengers against boarding vehicles that have not complied with the new traffic rules.

Mr Kariuki said about 250 vehicles in the coast region have so far undergone inspection, making them roadworthy.

He said most of the owners have been asking for more time to comply with the regulations adding that there will be no extension of the deadline.

Monday, tens of PSVs rushed to dealers to fit the new speed governors and for inspection at the Miritini Traffic Police base to comply with the new regulations.

“Engineer Michael Kamau (Transport Cabinet Secretary) has already given the orders and today (Monday) marks the deadline. So, we are not going to give them any more time because the Cabinet Secretary was very clear. We are starting the crackdown and the inspectorate is not ready for last minute rushes,” added Kariuki.

He said vehicles that have complied with the rules will have their Sacco stickers on the front, rear windows and at the back for quick recognition. Any vehicle that will not have complied with the rules will be regarded as unroadworthy to operate thus leading to arrest.

Reformed Matatu Operators’ Chairman Elias Kipkoech said the Government should have understood their problems first.

“The Government should look at us first. When the cabinet secretary stands and says that all drivers should go on a refresher course, why are they not telling us who will cater for the fees,” said Kipkoech.
