MPs call for resignation of KNEC officials over ‘incompetence’

NAIROBI, KENYA: Nyanza MPs have called for total overhaul of the Kenya National Examination Council and resignation of CEO Paul Wasanga.

The leaders led by Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo alleged that the team is incompetent in handling national exams. They alleged that the cancellation of exams in five schools from Siaya County was politically instigated and calls for an apology from Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi and immediate grading of the affected schools.

They have threatened to move to court if the matter is not resolved immediately.

They cited Maranda High School saying it has never been involved in exam cheating and has remained consistent in performance and questioned KNEC's decision to cancel the results without giving convincing explanation on the action.

The lawmakers said Maranda should have been graded position one or two nationally as it had registered 423 students of which only 23 computer students were affected.

Other schools affected from the county are Nyamonye, Ngiya, Sawagongo, and Ukwala.
