Busia County; KENYA: A community water project in Teso North sub-county has received a major boost after an NGO donated Sh4 million towards it.

World Vision donated the funds to Rwatama Water Spring towards the construction of a water sump and water kiosks in Ang’urai division.

The NGO helped in the protection of the water catchment area, construction of a 12,000 cubic litre pump, construction of water kiosks and piping.

Chairman of Rwatama Linus Otiya thanked the NGO adding that it has helped solve the problem of water shortage in the region. Otiya said the project currently serves over 5,000 households and two secondary schools: Kolanya boys and girls. He said the two schools had operated without running water for decades.

More support

“This sponsorship by the World Vision has come as a blessing to the community. The two secondary schools and several primary schools have also benefitted,” said Otiya.

The water project runs by gravity since the catchment area is raised and the Water Ministry also assisted in the extension of the piping at a cost of Sh800,000. So far, the cost of the project has been Sh5.2 million.

Rwatama Secretary Solomon Opagala however said they needed more support for the project to benefit more people. “If we get a bigger water pump, we shall be able to serve more than 15,000 households,” said Opagala.
