Moi, Raila mourn Thatcher

Nairobi, Kenya: Former President Daniel arap Moi and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have mourned the death of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister.

 Moi said during his administration, he had worked closely with Thatcher to strengthen development cooperation between Kenya and Britain. He recalled that Thatcher had marshalled funds to build the ultra-modern Moi University Library in Eldoret.

“As the first British Woman Prime Minister and political party leader, Thatcher inspired many women worldwide to venture into political leadership. I send my condolences to the bereaved family and the British people for the loss of this great mother and leader,” said Moi.

Raila in his message wish well her family, the Conservative Party and the people of Britain saying many will remember Mrs Thatcher not only as Britain's first female prime minister, but as a pioneer of many important ideas that transformed not only Britain but many nations including Kenya.

“Mrs Thatcher will go down in history not only as Britain's first female prime minister, but as a pioneer of many important ideas that transformed not only her country but many nations across the globe, including Kenya,” said Raila.

He went on to add that the ex-Prime Minister had initiated a closer scrutiny of what the role of the state should be in the lives of citizens which has transformed living conditions of people in many nations.

“She popularised the idea that a functioning economy is at the centre of freedom with sayings l like “there is no liberty unless there is economic liberty,” pointed Raila.

Margaret Thatcher in her life fired up women’s involvement in politics and public life with famous remarks like; “if you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.”

Margaret Thatcher died on Monday following a stroke.
