A church has been told it can keep more than £100,000 worth of cash found in a bin bag on its property.

The parish church of St Thomas with St Maurice, in York, said it would spend the money on its continuing work in the community.

The bag of banknotes was found on Haxby Road by a resident earlier this year and immediately handed over to police.

Despite detectives’ suspicions, no evidence of criminal involvement was found, and magistrates gave it to the church under the lost and found procedure.

The Diocese of York said the £100,000 was 2.5 times what the church usually raises in annual income.

‘It’s great news for the church,’ said Eleanor Course of the diocese.
