Moi University says law degree accredited

Moi University has maintained that its Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree course meets the national and regional standards.

This comes after the Council of Legal Education (CLE) excluded it from a list of universities credited to offer the degree course.

In an advertisement, CLE Chief Executive Officer Kulundu Bitonye said only 12 institutions had been licensed to offer the course.

Among those published include Riara, Kisii, Africa Nazarene, University of Nairobi (Parklands and Mombasa), Kabarak, Egerton, Strathmore, Kenyatta, Jomo Kenyatta, Catholic and Mt Kenya universities.

Conspicuously missing is Moi University, with Vice Chancellor Laban Ayiro insisting that the institution's LLB programme was fully accredited by the Commission for University Education.

"CLE's notice is not only illegal, as it flies in the face of the findings of the High Court but also a mischievous attempt at subverting the judgement, against which it has chosen to exercise its right of appeal," reads part of the statement from the university.

Prof Ayiro said the CLE notice was in contravention of the status quo order issued by the Court of Appeal on June 15, 2016.

He said the court ruled that the decision to deny Moi University accreditation as a legal degree provider was made in violation of the law.
