Girl scores 95 per cent in Maths contest to bag degree scholarship

Two hours were enough for Jehui Sang from Bahati girls to bag a full degree scholarship after emerging the best in the game of numbers with 95 percent.

In a Maths contest dubbed 'Brookside Mathletes' held at Strathmore university courtesy of Brookside limited, Jehui Sang and Dominick Juma expressed their joy at winning the award.

Jehui who is from Bahati girls scored 95 per cent while Juma from Nairobi School managed 92 per cent.

"This is a boy who always leads. He has self-drive," said James Koinange who teaches maths at Nairobi school.

Despite the strike that paralysed learning for over a month, Koinange says that he's optimistic the boy will replicate the same in KCSE since the school covered syllabus by June last year. The two students will now get a scholarship of Sh1.6 million each to pursue a course of their dreams at Strathmore University.

Speaking during the event that brought together 90 students from 10 counties, Brookside Marketing Manager, Peter Wesonga said that the annual event has helped to demystify the perception that mathematics is hard.

"This is a win-win contest. Students have won scholarships and teachers that have produced the best student will go home with Sh150, 000 cheque for their math departments," said Wasonga.

The first and second runners up in boys’ category were Jeremy Kani and Daudi Simon from Mang'u and Muumbuni boys respectively. Beatrice Kinya (Moi Girls Eldoret) and Winnie Njeri(Machakos girls) won in girls category to complete the quartet that won a diploma scholarship at Strathmore.

Winners in form three category, Mwanzia Gideon (Mang'u high) and Annette Oloo(Kenya High) relieved their parents of next year's school fees since Brookside will be responsible.

The contest which started in 3 counties has extended to 10 this year and the organisers say they are determined to reach all the counties.

This year’s contest attracted more than 30,000 students with 100 making it to the grand finale. Next year's contest will run from February to July and is expected to attract more participants.
