Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Keriako Tobiko has directed the Inspector-General (IG) of Police to arraign a police officer in court for murder charges.

Corporal Chibungu Sanga, attached to Mukurwe-ini Police Station is accused of murdering Gregory Kingori Kanyi in Mukurweini, Nyeri County on May 7, 2015.

Head of Communications and Outreach in the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Gladys Some said IPOA concluded investigations and forwarded the file to the DPP with recommendations that the officer be charged with murder.

"... the DPP concurred with the Authority's recommendations and directed that Sanga be charged with murder. The other four officers involved in the incident will undergo disciplinary action," said Some.

Following the death of Kanyi, IPOA launched investigations into his death.

She said: "The Authority's investigations revealed that on 22 February 2015, the late Kanyi was involved in a physical fight with a police officer at a bar in Mukurweini town. On 7th May, 2015 a group of five officers went to Kanyi's home to arrest him at midnight. During the mission one of the officers was armed. They  broke Kanyi's door and as he ran out he was shot at."

She added: "After the shooting, Kanyi continued running and was found lying dead in a nearby coffee plantation with a single gunshot wound on the chest.

"The bullet which killed Kanyi travelled through his body, past the open door space and through the wooden wall of his bedroom narrowly missing his two young children who were sleeping," she concluded.
