Police arrest suspected baby thief

Nyahururu, Kenya: Police in Nyahururu town have arrested a woman suspected of stealing a one-week-old baby last Thursday.

The suspect was arrested at Nyahururu Charity medical clinic where she claimed to have given birth.

Nyandarua OCPD Benjamin Onsongo said the staff at the facility alerted the police who arrested the woman.

“They told us that there was a woman who was claiming to have given birth at the facility which was a lie and wanted police intervention for investigation,” said the OCPD.

Mr Onsongo said the police went and arrested the suspect and then called another woman who had reported to the station that her baby had been stolen.

“She came and confirmed that the baby boy was actually hers,” he said.

The suspect’s husband and sister-in-law were also present at the police station and denied ever seeing her pregnant at any one time.

The baby’s mother narrated how they met with the suspect at Nyahururu district hospital on Thursday and became friends to a point that they went for lunch at one of the hotels in the town.
