Leaflets warn non-residents to move out of trading centre

Tension is brewing in Dede trading centre after unknown people circulated leaflets warning non-residents to leave the area.

The leaflets are said to have been distributed on Sunday night, warning non-residents operating businesses in the area of dire consequences if they did not relocate.

Speaking to The Standard, Dancun Odindo, a trader, accused local leaders of inciting residents to evict "foreigners".

"We have information that some local leaders are inciting some youths to circulate the leaflets telling non-residents to leave the area," said Mr Odindo.

"Most locals feel threatened by non-residents operating businesses here, but they forget that some of these traders have created many jobs for the youth," he added.

Member of the County Assembly Philip Ouma condemned those behind the leaflets.

"The best way to beat your competitor is by offering better services, not sending them away," he said.

Awendo OCPD Kipsang Tangach said police were investigating the matter.
