Fourth year University of Nairobi student commits suicide

NAKURU COUNTY: A fourth year bachelor of arts in tourism student at University of Nairobi (UoN) committed suicide at Kandutura village, Bahati Sub County on Sunday morning.

Bahati police boss Duncan Nguthu said George Muragu Mugo 23, locked himself in his single house and committed suicide by hanging himself with a piece of bed sheet.

Nguthu said the deceased who has been suffering from psychological ailment though under medical care had not accepted his condition.

He said the incident was reported by his parents after he failed to appear to take breakfast together with his family who later broke into the house and found him hanging dead in the morning incident.

The deceased left a note informing his parents and friends that he was not ready to continue suffering from the untreated condition on ground it affected both his social and academic livelihood.

The fourth year student added that he was tired of taking drugs all the time and that death was the best option to avoid undergoing stress and depression.

"The deceased locked himself in a house and hanged himself using a piece of bed sheet claiming he was tired living a stressful life following his mental condition," said Nguthu.

His body was taken to Nakuru municipal mortuary for postmortem.

Nguthu has however warned parents to take care of their children suffering from mental illness to prevent unexpected deaths following depression they undergo.

He also advised parents to take their children for guidance and counselling specialists to enable them cope with their condition despite challenges they face.

"There are so many people who end up committing suicide due to challenges encountered in life. Parents should take responsibility of helping their children to accept such condition and engage them to specialists including taking them for regular medical attention," he advised.
