Hit-and-run driver arrested after matatu hits power post

Nairobi, Kenya; A matatu driver was arrested after his vehicle was involved in an accident as he tried to escape from the scene along Ngong Road, Nairobi.

Ten passengers were injured in the accident that happened yesterday morning.

The driver is said to have hit a boy and tried to escape, prompting the Administration Police officers who were near the point of the incident to give chase.

The officers were forced to shoot in the air, prompting the driver of the matatu to lose control of the vehicle and hit an electric post near Adams Arcade shopping centre, where he was arrested.

Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam said the driver seemed to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident. “He also posed a danger to other road users and the passengers he was carrying to the city centre,” said Mr Katam.

And in Buruburu, Nairobi, a 13-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in a city hospital.

The boy was hit by a tyre in their house. Police said the boy was playing with his friends at their house’s staircase when the tyre hit and ran over him.
