Mother dies while trying to save daughter

Kakamega, Kenya: A woman was on Friday killed by a truck in Kipkaren, Kakamega County as she attempted to save her 8-year-old child who had dashed to the road from being knocked. It was bad luck as a speeding lorry hit her, and the daughter was lucky to escape.

A witness, Doreen Simiyu, the mother was coming from Kipkaren Bridge Primary School where she had gone to pick her daughter from school. "She stopped at Kipkaren shopping Centre to buy her daughter a piece of roasted maize when a speeding lorry lost control and hit her as she tried to save her daughter who had remained behind," Simiyu said.

Rose Wanjala, who had accompanied the woman, 35, said the truck which was ferrying construction materials from Mombasa to Uganda failed to ascend the hill at Kipkaren market and reversed suddenly.

Lugari OCPD Bernard Macharia said: "The incident occurred along Eldoret-Webuye highway where a lorry ferrying construction materials failed to ascend a hill.
