Low pupil turn out in Nairobi schools on Sabasaba day

NAIROBI, KENYA: Primary schools in Nairobi recorded a low turnout of pupils due for fears of possible chaos during Saba Saba rally. The pupils in their classes conducted their private studies as their teachers held discussions in their school compounds in groups. A spot check conducted by The Standard in Nairobi revealed that most schools were deserted as most pupils failed to turn up though teachers reported to work. In Moi Avenue Primary School, few pupils were spotted in classes doing private studies.

The head teacher of the school who did not want to be named told The Standard that pupils were very few in their classes making it hard for teachers to continue with lessons.

“All the teachers are present but the pupils did not come to school. One cannot teach in an empty class,” she said.

Class Eight has 48 pupils but only six reported to school. In City Primary School, parents kept their children out of school for fear of violence.

The head teacher of the school Rose Mbaya said the population of the school is 870 but less than 300 pupils reported. The school which also has special units for children with autism saw the attendance of six teen pupils for autism attending classes. The autism class has 135 pupils.

“Parents are afraid to release their children to school. Most pupils use public means of transport and we also allow parents to park their vehicles in the school compound but today the parking is empty,” said Mbaya.
