OYUGIS: The Homa Bay county government has launched a solar lighting project at a cost of Sh240 million.

The project dubbed “Okonyo welo Solar Lighting” is expected to introduce lighting in 285 market centres in the county.

Speaking in Oyugis town during the launch, Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti said the project is aimed at encouraging a 24-hour economy.

He said his government is committed to ensuring businesses are given the support required to boost economic growth.

“Our main aim is to extend market hours so that traders can operate any time they choose. The only way to ensure economic prosperity in our county is to initiate a 24-hour economy so that all groups of people get involved in wealth creation,” he said.

The project, which is being undertaken in collaboration with a private organisation, Horizon Media Ltd, will be implemented in two phases in the next three years.

It will also be extended to the major townships such as Ndhiwa, Mbita, Kendu Bay and Kadongo.
