According to the Football Observatory, part of Neuchatel’s International Centre for Sports Studies, Manchester United’s squad has been confirmed to be the most expensive with a staggering figure of £628MILLION put together.

That is £74m more than Spanish giants Real Madrid have spent on players under Coach Zinedine Zidane with the Red Devils’ local rivals Manchester City coming third.

But while Mourinho has sought to rein back the expectations, pointing to the problems he inherited from Louis van Gaal, many fans will want to see that huge financial expenditure bring instant success.

Mourinho sanctioned the world record £89m signing of Paul Pogba — yet to pull up too many trees — as well as spending big on defender Eric Bailly and forward Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Those signings saw the cost of the United first-team squad rise £161m over the summer despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic arriving on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.
