Newcastle target David Moyes as manager after failing in their pursuit for Steve McClaren

David Moyes will decide his future at the end of the season after crisis club Newcastle joined West Ham in the chase for his services.

It is a significant shift for Real Sociedad boss Moyes, who has so far insisted he wants to stay on at the Spanish club - who gave him a route back into the game in November after he was sacked only 10 months into his reign at Manchester United last April.

Newcastle - on a run of eight consecutive defeats that has left them just two points above the relegation places - have kept caretaker boss John Carver in charge for the remaining three games of this season after failing with a bid for Derby manager Steve McClaren to take over immediately.

With Carver having seemingly lost the St James’ Park dressing room, however, they are still set to make a change at the end of the season.

They are behind West Ham, though, in the hunt for Moyes, as the Irons have had him as their No.1 target for months.

Current boss Sam Allardyce secured only his second win in 14 matches last weekend against Burnley, but there is still a will to make a change when his contract expires this summer and West Ham are believed to have sounded out potential replacements.

The London club - who were openly targeting a shock place in Europe next season before Christmas - feel they should be finishing at least in the top eight in the Premier League as a result of their spending last summer.

Their disillusioned fans have also called for a change at the end of the season.

Ironically, Newcastle’s north-east rivals Sunderland have Allardyce among their targets to replace interim boss Dick Advocaat, should the Dutchman - only appointed in mid-March - keep the relegation-haunted club in the Premier League.
