Uncertain future: Robin van Persie unsure if he'll extend old Trafford deal

Robin van Persie admits he must improve to earn new contract

Robin van Persie admits he has not been good enough for Manchester United this season and must raise his level to earn a new deal.

Van Persie, who plundered 30 goals in his first season at United following his £24million move from Arsenal, has managed just eight from 21 appearances this term.

The 31-year-old has 18 months of his current deal to run and was honest enough to admit he does not know whether boss Louis van Gaal will hand him an extension, despite their close working relationship.

“I think everyone in the team is responsible,” said Van Persie. “Everyone feels responsible. I do, definitely.

“This year I've played something like 20 games and I've scored eight goals. I'm not happy with that. I want to score more.

“I'll do everything, every day in training and during the games I'll keep doing what I've been doing for the last 10 years to make those goals.

“In my last couple of games I didn't score. But I know what I have to do to create those opportunities and I'll keep doing that. At the moment, it's not enough. I know that.

“We're not scoring enough goals, including me. I have to be honest. I'll do everything I can to improve that.”
