Angel Di Maria suffered an injury scare to add to Louis van Gaal’s selection headache at Manchester United.

Di Maria was sent for an X-ray last night after United team-mate Nani stood on his right foot.

Argentina boss Gerardo Martino claims Di Maria was not badly hurt and the £59.7million winger carried on playing.

Martino said: “We don’t think it’s anything serious. It was quite a hard blow he took and it was a hard knock. It cut the skin a little bit.

“We’ve had a look at it and we are evaluating the situation. We are having a look at some X-rays, some https://cdn.standardmedia.co.ke/images, that have been taken. But in spite of that, we don’t think it’s too serious.”

The Argentina star hopes he will be fit to face Arsenal on Saturday and wrote on Twitter: “It was just a blow. I hope it does not swell anymore so I can play at the weekend.”

Van Gaal was at Old Trafford and the United boss will desperately be hoping the scans show no break because he is already grappling with an injury crisis.

The Dutchman left 10 minutes before the end of this disappointing friendly , which was settled by substitute Raphael Guerreiro’s stoppage-time header.

The 41,000 fans came hoping to see football’s heavyweights Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo slug it out – but instead left disappointed by this display of shadow boxing.

Apart from a few jabs landed by Messi, who hit the post, there was little to excite the expectant crowd.

Ronaldo’s only contributions were to blaze over and kick Lucas Biglia in the stomach on his return to his former home and both superstars were substituted at half-time.
