'One of my worst days in football': Rooney despair after Man United's 'nightmare' 3-0 defeat to Liverpool

(The Mirror) Wayne Rooney described Manchester United’s defeat to Liverpool as a “nightmare” and one of the worst days of his career.

United’s troubled first season under David Moyes sank to a new low with Sunday's Old Trafford humiliation against their fiercest rivals.

Steven Gerrard scored twice from the penalty spot and missed a third for a hat-trick, while Luis Suarez compounded United’s misery with a goal late on.

Victory for Liverpool saw them move up to second spot and close the gap on leaders Chelsea to four points, with a game in hand.

While Liverpool continued their push for the title, champions United - who had skipper Nemanja Vidic sent off - suffered another setback under Moyes, Rooney admitting it was as bad as it gets.

“It’s a nightmare,” said striker Rooney. “It’s one of the worst days I’ve ever had in football and it’s hard to take.

“You have to give Liverpool credit, they played well, but it’s difficult to take. Nobody wants to lose, especially in this way, in your own stadium. It’s not nice.”

United have lost nine times in the Premier League this season, the most they have suffered since 2001-02, and must win all of their remaining nine games to avoid their lowest points total in 21 years.

Old Trafford boss Moyes admitted: “We didn’t play well. It’s difficult to explain it. We have to play better and we’re going to have to make ourselves harder to beat and harder to play against.

“The job here was always going to be hard. Harder? Yes I would say so, yes. But the players are capable of turning it around.”
