And then following the 1-0 win over their bitter rivals Mourinho gestured 4-0 with his hands before offering his hands in apology.

United went behind in the opening minute of their game at Stamford Bridge and never recovered from the setback, eventually shipping four goals.

It was a nightmare return for Mourinho to his former club - and he has admitted his disappointment at the performance.

"As the leader of this squad I want to start by saying sorry to all the Manchester United fans around the world," he wrote.

"Sunday's 4-0 defeat at Chelsea was not a United result; it was a result which made us all extremely sorry for all our supporters and we all apologise for it."

Mourinho was also keen to thank the fans for their support during the Chelsea game.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was forced to rally the home support in the final 10 minutes of the game - despite being 4-0 up - because all he could hear was United's fans.

"Once again at Stamford Bridge our fans were sensational," Mourinho said.

"I cannot think of another set of supporters who would be singing for 90 minutes like that when their team was losing.

"They were a credit to the club and feel so sorry for them that the result could not match their performance."

Attention now turns to the clash with City and returning to winning ways.

Mourinho has admitted that the loss of Eric Bailly to injury is a major problem for the side, however, as he is set to miss two months worth of action.

"We have our problems and the biggest one of all is that Eric Bailly suffered an injury at Chelsea which will force him to many matches," he said.

"Eric has started his first season at United very well indeed and it is a real shame for him and for us that he will now be on the sidelines.

"The same applies to Phil Jones, who is in the same situation."
