Over 2,000 students to attend career forum in Nairobi

NAIROBI: Candidates who sat the 2014 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and recently received their results will for the next three days have a chance to seek career advice.

Nairobi International Education Fair, which is on its 17th edition, is being sponsored by The Standard Media Group and held at the Sarit Center-who are also sponsors - in Nairobi. It is expected to attract at least 2,000 participants that include both local and international universities and colleges.

The fair, which over the years has become the largest of its in kind in Africa, offers a one-stop-shop for institutions and potential students to meet and exchange information on some of the courses being offered for different careers.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Fair that kicked off Thursday, Secretary General of the Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) Mutheu Kasanga pointed out that the Fair that is held annually has contributed to the rise in people who enroll for tertiary education.

"All the millennium development goals as well as Vision 2030 have a link to education and as much as the tertiary education sector has really opened up over the years; it is a good thing to offer students international options," she said.

She encouraged potential students to not only focus on universities but also on colleges, which she said have a lot to offer.

Express Communications Limited Chief Executive Officer Sammy Masara who was tasked with putting together the event said the fair would be taken to Mombasa on March 18-19, Kisumu on March 30-31, Embu on March 23-24 and Eldoret on April 2-3, to ensure that all possible beneficiaries would not miss out.

He added that the Fair was looking to spread its wings in the number of people it could reach with career advice through partnerships.

"We have partnered with the KPSA and the Kenya National Union of Teachers to ensure that we reach out to career teachers and as many students as possible," he explained.

Potential college and university students who have just finished secondary school or are still in school were advised to take advantage of the Fair in helping them decide on what they want to pursue.

KTN Business Manager Ken Otwenyo, who represented the Standard Media Group CEO Sam Shollei at the event encouraged students to not only focus on what an institution can offer in terms of papers but also on how it can contribute to their character and personality.

"Do not wait for success to fall on your lap, you have to go and get it. So, take advantage of the next three days," he advised students.
