Mike Sonko offers to adopt boy who witnessed father’s murder in Mathare.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has offered to adopt a three-year-old boy who tragically witnessed the stabbing death of his father in Mathare.

The heartbreaking incident occurred on Monday morning when Michael Oworo, 32, was escorting his son to a baby care centre in the Mathare 4A area. According to witnesses, Oworo was attacked by suspected robbers and stabbed. Despite efforts to save him, he died at the scene before an ambulance could arrive.

The boy, who had been a few meters away, was left crying and confused after watching his father’s brutal death. Neighbours said Oworo had been a single parent, raising his son alone since he was three months old.

Sonko expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy on X, saying, “This has really heartbroken my heart. I have been saddened by this story of a little boy whose father was stabbed and killed by suspected thugs while taking him to school.” He added, “The father was a construction worker and a single parent struggling to raise his son since the child was three months old.”

At the scene, a lunch box containing ugali and omena was found, highlighting the father’s effort to provide for his child despite his struggles.

“The little boy cried as he watched his father being stabbed by the thugs. He looked helpless, and unfortunately, the father died before an ambulance could arrive,” he wrote.

Sonko, known for his philanthropy, immediately stepped forward to offer the boy a new chance at life. “Since the child has now been left an orphan, as usual, let him be brought to me. I will pick from where the father left and continue raising the child,” he said.

Sonko also shared his condemnation of the attackers and prayed for justice. “May the Lord rest the soul of the father of this little boy in eternal peace. May the thugs who committed this heinous act never have peace for the rest of their lives,” he wrote.

Mike Sonko’s offer to adopt the boy comes as part of his ongoing commitment to helping vulnerable children. In 2014, he adopted Satrine Osinya, a boy who survived a terror attack that killed his mother. Satrine has since been raised by Sonko as part of his family.
