Kenyan-born Hollywood-based actress and writer Peres Owino has been nominated in the record-breaking 16 NAACP Image Awards for Lifetime Network.

She joins the movie household names from Kenya like ‘daughter of the land’, Lupita Nyong’o who won an Academy Award for her role in 12 Years a Slave.  She also joins Benjamin Alfred Onyango, who has featured in the Hollywood movie God’s not dead.

Owino together with her partner writer/producer Sharon Brathwaite, were nominated for their Outstanding Writing in Television Movie, Seasons of Love.

“I’m grateful to Lifetime and all the black women who worked to get Seasons to the screen. It’s very humbling getting this caliber of recognition from the NAACP,” Owino said.

She is a trained actor and has appeared in dozens of plays in Los Angeles and New York City. Owino has played three of theater’s most coveted roles: Hamlet, Lysistrata and Lady Macbeth.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Awards celebrate the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film.

Besides her latest film, Peres Owino has also written and produced The call (2002) and Bound: Africans versus African Americans (2014).

With this myriad of both home-grown and foreign movie and theater talent, I think it’s time Kenyans came up with something like “Kellywood” to show the world what we are made of.
