Rotary donates Sh1 million wheelchairs to special school

Rotary District 9212 donates 34 wheelchairs worth Sh1 million to Sahajanad Special School in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, May 17, 2025. [Joachim Bwana, Standard] Students at Sahajanad Special School in Mtwapa received wheelchairs worth Sh1 million from the Rotary District 9212. Rotary club donated 34 wheelchairs on Thursday to the school in Kilifi County as part of their outreach projects to the needy communities to mark its 100 years anniversary. The wheelchairs are part of a project funded by Rotary Club Mombasa and Rotary Club of Weston. More than 1000 Rotarians from Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan congregated in Mombasa County to celebrate 100 years of impactful service in Africa. Rotary District 9212 governor Joe Kamau said that they have received Sh1.5 billion grant from partners to run projects within the three countries. "We have done grants worth billions of shillings and contributed resources and skills to the communities in need of basic education to help needy children, refurbishing labs and libraries. We have also dug boreholes in needy communities," said Kamau. He revealed Rotary District 9212 has a history of making a difference, with active grants valued at Sh6 billion across the four countries it serves. Kamau said the meeting seeks to outline the vision for Rotary in the next 100 years, with a mission to care for the community and impact lives without discrimination. He noted that the District Conference and Awards Ceremony marks a century of transformative service, humanitarian impact, and community development across the continent. Kamau said Rotarians have over the years donated billions of shillings, skills and expertise to projects that help the less fortunate in Kenya. "We are committed to advancing the ideals of peace, health, education, and economic development. "This centennial celebration is not only a look back at the milestones achieved, but a renewed call to action as we continue to serve our communities with dedication and purpose," said Kamau. Kamau said the Rotary District 9212 has collaborated with organisations like Safaricom Plc and Pumwani Maternity Hospital on various projects. Speaking on behalf of Mombasa Governor Abdulswamand Nassir, Trade CEC Mohamed Osman assured that the county will continue to partner with Rotary club in areas of interest. "We are committed as a county to ensure we partner with them on disease eradication, healthcare, water supply, and other ventures that support the poor," said Osman.
