Councillor George Aladwa of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has been voted the new Mayor of Nairobi.

The Makongeni/Kaloleni ward representative beat PNU’s James Gakuya to emerge the winner with 57 votes against the rival’s 39.

Aladwa has been acting Mayor, after Geoffrey Majiwa, who formerly held the position stepped aside following corruption allegations that landed him in court over the purchase of cemetery land in Mavoko Municipality, Machakos District.

The Wednesday’s polls conducted at City Hall through secret ballot were presided over by Majiwa.

The polls marks the end of an era, as next elections will be held under the New Constitution, where Mayors will be elected directly by Kenyan voters.

At the Nairobi City Council, ODM has 53 councillors while PNU has 45.
