WCQ: Brazil romp Uruguay as Paulinho steals the show in a five-goal thriller

The Samba Boys travelled to Estadio Centenario, Montevideo to play Uruguay for the South American World Cup Qualifier(CONMEBOL) clash on Thursday, March 23.

The visitors took the lead in the ninth minute after Edinson Cavani was fouled in the box by keeper Allison following Marcelo’s horrendous back pass. The PSG striker made no mistake in converting from the stop.

Brazil responded ten minutes later with Neymar Jr. delivering a low ball onto Paulinho who fired a superb shot few yards outside the box.

Uruguay, who last beat Brazil in 2001, found the tough going when Firmino’s rebound was quickly tapped in from close range by Paulinho in the 52nd minute.

Miranda’s long clearance saw Barcelona forward, Neymar net the third for Brazil with such a splendid scoop over Martin Silva’s head into the back of the net.

Chinese Super League and ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder grabbed his treble in the added time. He sealed a vital away win, thanks to Daniel Alves masterclass chest control followed by a through pass in the midst of Uruguay defenders.

Brazil, who are the first ever side in CONMEBOL qualifying stage to reach 30 points, tops the table. Uruguay is second with 23 points.

Argentina climbed to third with 22 points after a slim 1-0 win over Chile last night, thanks to Lionel Messi’s first-half penalty. Chile is struggling in the 6th position in a group of ten nations.
