KDF player Harold Mumbo aims for the goal as Cereals opponent Peter Omondi tries to stop him during the East and Central Africa Clubs Championships at Nyayo National Stadium, yesterday.

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Youth men’s handball side overpowered Boomerang HB 32-23 in a Kenya Handball Federation national league encounter played at the Nyayo National Stadium yesterday.

The military side dominated the match from the first whistle posting a commanding 18-8 score at the breather.

KDF’s Meshack Malanga emerged the top scorer with 11 goals in the match with teammate Noah Cheruiyot accurately shooting nine.

Shem Momanyi scored six as Boomerang’s top scorer in the fixture.

Commenting on performance of the team, Boomerang captain Robert Osano said game management contributed to the poor performance saying they will improve as the league continues.

“We played well against KDF Youth but management issues failed us, we arrived late for our fixture and we never warmed up before that match compared to our opponents who had much time to warm up. Lack of warm up cost us because we picked up in the second half.

“We settled down in the second half but by then we were not able to catch up with KDF. We have learned from our mistakes and going forward,we will strive to minimise them if we are to post good results in our remaining league matches,” he said.

Osano, however, said the team has improved this season compared to last season.

“This is a very young team and our second season in the top league. Last season, we were second last, but until now I can see much improvement in the team. Our aim is to finish in a better position,” he said.

KDF Youth started the match on a high note with a score of 8-4 in the first quarter and continued with the assault to register 18-8 score before the breather.

On resumption, Boomerang pressed, but they failed to narrow down the scores trailing KDF Youth 18-25 by the third quarter.

In another match played at the same venue, KDF men’s team whitewashed Matuu 64-18 in a one sided match.
