Maina wins Standard golf classic top prize in Nyali

Maina Gichungu shot 5-under 71 to claim the Overall prize during the Standard County Golf Classic day played at the par 71, Nyali Golf and Country Club in Mombasa over the weekend. Gichungu played five better to triumph in the tourney that saw over 150 golfers brave the scorching sun throughout the day to battle it out for the top honours.

Standard County Golf Classic is sponsored by the Standard Group Ltd; the publishers of The Standard, The Nairobian, and broadcasters of Radio Maisha, KTN home and KTN News among others.

Gichungu, playing off handicap 12, posted 21 stableford points by the turn, adding 20 more points for a compact score of 41 stableford points to guarantee himself a handshake with the sponsor and an opportunity to deliver the winners speech.

“If you ask me how I did it, my answer would be I don’t know but I played alongside good friends, Mureithi urged me on after he told me; sometimes the game just comes, after which wonders started happening,” Gichungu said in his winners speech.

The win also saw Gichungu receive a three-month free subscription of the Standard newspaper, and The Nairobian while the Men winner Atul Patel and the Lady winner Florence Karimi will each get a month’s supply of the Standard newspaper and The Nairobian.

Atul Patel playing off handicap 12 was the Men winner on a score of 39 (19+20) stableford points, with Dominic Makau playing off 13, beating Mathew Githinji on countback on a score of 38 (19+19) stableford points to take Men second and third respectively.

Handicap 13 Florence Karimi played 4 better to don the Ladies Medal on a score of 40 stableford points. Teresia Odoo (38) settled for Lady second.

Alyssa Jamal playing off 30 shot 5 under 41 (18+23) stableford points to lift the Junior prize with single handicapper Daniel Nduva 2 bagging the Gross prize on 38 gross points.

Guest prize went to Tania Williams playing off handicap 16 who carded 32 (12+20) stablford points, with J Okuku settling for Guest second on a score of 22(6+16) stableford points.
