Make your corner spaces count

If you look around your living space, you will be amazed at how many corners are sitting idle. Today we look at the various ways you can make proper use of corner spaces in your house.

Corner cabinets

The corner cabinet is a fantastic space-saving storage device which snuggles into otherwise idle corners. It looks good in tight spaces as it takes up little floor space and also looks great in a large room which can even accommodate a taller piece.

An evolution item from our traditional bulky and gigantic wall units, a corner cabinet is functional yet discreet and does not take up the entire wall space. Use the corner cabinet to organise and stack your favourite china dishes, glasses and cutlery neatly.

Cabinets with glass doors will look good and keep away the dust as well as protect dishes from accidental knocks. However, the glass and mirror will need regular cleaning so that there are no unsightly greasy fingerprints. Some cabinets have lockers in case you need to protect your dishes from pilferage.

I once found that my precious china had been picked and the front row left on the display window. I would never have guessed that the back row cups were missing. It always helps to have lighting in the display unit to illuminate inside the cupboard and a bright radiance to the room at night.

Open corner shelves

Shelves is another great way to utilise idle corners. Dishes, snack jars or recipe books can be displayed more prominently on vertical shelves. Wooden glass shelves can be placed in the kitchen or bedroom, dining room or living glass shelves. They bring life to walls as they create a lived-in atmosphere and provide an opportunity to express your personality.

Corner showers

We could all do with extra space in the bathrooms. The corner shower enclosures are incredibly useful for maximising on floor space. Some are transparent, and would need to be in an enclosed bathroom.

Others include frosted glass or completely opaque for privacy. Whichever option you choose, ensure that you install the shower professionally (this is one of those times you need for forego your do-it-yourself instincts) so that the enclosure gives you durability and keeps the water inside.

Lazy-Susan

This is a two or three-tiered turn-table or rotating kitchen accessory that is placed at the corner of kitchen cabinets for easy access to dishes placed at the far end of the cabinet. Usually, these would be your less frequently used dishes which are kept at the farthest corner such as hot pots and serving dishes.

Placing them on a Lazy Susan table means that you have easy and quick access to the dishes without having to kneel and push half of your upper body into a cupboard. It also means that the deep sections of your cabinets always stay tidy and well-organised.
