Ex-wife seeks Sh400,000 maintenance from Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario

NAIROBI: An ex-wife of Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario has gone to court demanding Sh400,000 in maintenance every month.

In papers filed in the Family Court registry yesterday, Kaltum Dima Guyo claims the Sports, Culture and Arts CS has not honoured his end of the bargain following their divorce in the UK on May 5, 2012.

Through her lawyer, John Khaminwa, the woman says she and Mr Wario were childhood sweethearts and were married in 1997.

“I want the court to issue an order directed against the respondent (Wario) to make monthly maintenance payments to the petitioner (Ms Dima) to the sum of Sh400,000 per month or such other sum this court may deem fit to grant,” the court papers read.

Of the total sum asked for, Dima wants the court to compel Wario to pay her monthly rent of Sh150,000, buy food for Sh50,000 and also meet her medical expenses valued at Sh50,000.

Dima also wants Wario to pay her Sh50,000 for her entertainment.

For her utility bills - water, electricity and garbage collection - she calculated that her ex-husband should pay Sh25,000 in addition to Sh40,000 for transport. She is also claiming Sh35,000 for her personal grooming.

MEAGRE INCOME

Dima also alleged that when Wario moved to London to do his doctorate degree at the University of East Anglia, he was unable to raise enough money. As a result, she opted to quit her job at the Kenya Tourism Board in 1999 to go and help him.

“To supplement the meagre income that the respondent was receiving from his scholarship, I obtained employment thus increasing the family income. It was as a result of the increased income that we were able to live a comfortable life that enabled the respondent have a conducive atmosphere to complete his studies,” Dima claimed.

She alleged that her job, coupled with the income he was earning, enabled them to obtain a mortgage for a house. As such, she needs to be paid back.
