Standard Five pupil commits suicide

A 12-year-old boy has committed suicide in Naivasha.

The Standard Five pupil from Kinungi Primary School died while undergoing treatment at Naivasha Sub-County Hospital after drinking a lethal chemical in 2K village.

There were conflicting reports over why the boy took his own life, with relatives accusing the school management of forcing the minor to repeat classes. But others said the boy had fallen out with his parents who work in one of the quarries before he decided to take his life.

Officers from the Ministry of Education are investigating the bizarre incident.

Naivasha Sub-County District Education Officer Kabaki Mbugua confirmed the death but was quick to note that he was not aware of allegations made against the school.

"We have information about a pupil who committed suicide in Kinungi and we have started investigations into the incident," he said.

James Kabono, a local leader, said trouble started last week when the minor returned to school after missing First Term.

"The boy attended school for one week in First Term before disappearing and returned last week to start Second Term in Standard Five," he said. He added that the school management could not allow this and directed that he report to Standard Four, a move that did not auger well with the minor and his parents.

Mr Kabono added that later the minor agreed to join Standard Four, but while working at home he fell out with his parents and drunk a pesticide.

"He was rushed to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment and we exonerate the school on this issue," he said.

Meanwhile police are investigating an incident in which two bodies were discovered along the Mai Mahiu-Narok road.

Naivasha OCPD Titus Munyoki said they has collected fingers prints from the two bodies and sent them to the registrar of persons to help with identification.
