City Hall gives clearance for CORD's rally at Uhuru Park

Nairobi’s Uhuru Park.

Uhuru Park was reserved for use by CORD to celebrate tomorrow's Madaraka Day, the Nairobi county government has said.

In a statement, County Secretary Robert Ayisi said CORD requested to use Uhuru Park through a letter dated May 22, 2016.

The County Government said Prayers Beyond Ministries, which had already paid for the venue for a four-day prophetic prayer rally from May 31 to 3rd June, had paid without approval from the City County.

"Nairobi City County Government is the sole custodian and trustee of Uhuru Park grounds, therefore the county has the right to approve or decline any request for use of its facilities," Mr Ayisi said.

"For avoidance of doubt and confusion we would like to categorically state that it is the approval to CORD which is valid and effective."

But, two MPs yesterday said 100 Jubilee legislators will grace a prayer meeting at same venue together with thousands of followers from Nairobi, Kiambu and Murang'a counties.

 ferry people

Kiharu MP Irungu Kang'ata and his Kabete counterpart Ferdinand Waititu said the rally would attract over 20,000 people and they had already mobilised 120 buses to ferry people to the venue of the prayers by Pastor Lucy Ngunjiri.

"We will be at the venue by 8am and if CORD supporters try to stone at us, we will be praying and the stones will turn into water because we believe in the power of prayer. We will only be having our prayer rally for peace and unity in the country," Mr Kang'ata said.

Waititu said CORD wants to form a parallel government and Jubilee would not allow that to happen.

"We have mobilised our people to attend the meeting and so far 100 MPs have confirmed participation," Mr Waititu added.
