Deputy President William Ruto says protests by the Opposition demanding electoral reforms will not distract the Jubilee government from its delivering it’s development agenda.

Ruto said protests championed by CORD principals were meant to achieve selfish ends and disrupt smooth running of the country.

The DP reiterated that the government was open to dialogue with the Opposition but insisted talks should be in line with provisions of the Constitution.

Speaking at Kirwara Boys High School in Gatanga, Murang’a yesterday, Ruto said Kenyans should not allow the Opposition to incite them.

“As the Jubilee government, we encourage dialogue as a solution to issues but we must confine ourselves to the Constitution,” he said. He said the Government was ready for dialogue through constitutional means.

He said Parliament, where all Kenyans are represented, was the best place to hold talks.

He said: “We have institutions provided for in the Constitution. Let us have consultation, dialogue and discussion based on the framework of the law.”

Ruto said religious leaders, the civil society and any other Kenyan can present views to Parliament, which in turn will pass the necessary law(s) on IEBC.

He claimed CORD leadership was unhappy with unity demonstrated by Jubilee leaders and their commitment to delivering election promises.

“Raila Odinga and his brigade should not be trusted with leadership,” said Ruto.

Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria asked his colleagues not to support CORD protests which he claimed could cause tension.

“I am pleading with my colleagues from CORD that they should shun supporting proponents of war since there are procedures that should be pursued towards disbanding IEBC,” said Iria.

The governor said Murang’a County’s development progress should be emulated by other county governments.

Ten MPs including Murang’a Women Rep Sabina Chege and her Gatundu South counterpart Moses Kuria said during Madaraka Day celebration, CORD supporters will not be allowed to cause chaos.

“Let CORD know that on June 1, MPs from constituencies near Nairobi will camp in the city to ensure any sabotage plans fail,” said Chege.
