The Government will announce three days of national mourning starting Sunday when the body of the former First Lady Lucy Kibaki arrives in the country from London.

According to Government Spokesperson Erick Kiraithe, the plane carrying the body will touch down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Sunday at 5.30am.

"We expect to receive the body of Mama Lucy at JKIA on Sunday morning. Upon arrival of the body, the Government will announce three days of national mourning and flags will fly at half-mast across the country," he said in a statement.

Mr Kiraithe (pictured) said condolence books will be available from today at Harambee House, Parliament, KICC, Holy Family Basilica, Consolata Shrine Westlands and all the 47 county headquarters.

He said a national working committee has been constituted comprising members of the Kibaki family and Government officials to ensure the former First Lady receives a befitting send-off.

Kiraithe said the committee will provide details of the burial once the body arrives.

Yesterday, Kiraithe asked journalists to remain silent for five minutes during the press briefing at KICC in honour of the former First Lady.

"I may not give details of the burial and who will attend. A national committee comprising the members of the Kibaki family will provide further details soon. But we are set to give a befitting send-off to the former First Lady," he said.

The spokesperson said foreign leaders and diplomats are also expected to attend the funeral.

Mrs Kibaki died at Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London over the weekend.
