CORD out to divide Kenya, says Deputy President William Ruto

Deputy President William Ruto has dismissed calls by the Opposition to disband the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Ruto maintained that the electoral commission will only be reconstituted through legal means.

“This is an institution that has been created by the Constitution and we cannot therefore disband it in press conferences and public rallies. Let the opposition follow the right procedures and not use intimidation to threaten us,” he said.

This comes after CORD threatened to storm IEBC offices on Monday to demand the commissioners sacking.

Ruto was speaking yesterday in Ol jororok town, Nyandarua County,  during a funds drive to purchase five school buses. More than Sh15 million was raised with the DP contributing Sh2 million.

The DP, who was accompanied by more than 20 MPs including are legislator JM Waiganjo and Governor Daniel Waithaka, accused the Opposition of propagating propaganda so as to cause chaos in the next General Election if they lose.

“This is something that we will not allow. We will not let this country to be plunged into chaos once again as the Opposition is planning. Let them accept the fact that we will defeat them by a big margin,” he said.

The DP urged Kenyans to respect institutions created by the Constitution.

“The only way that we can move the forward is to follow the law and not let propaganda lead us. It is a fact that the Opposition has no agenda for the Kenyan people and they are looking for every reason to divide the country,” he said.

Ruto said that since the collapse of the ICC cases, the Opposition was now worried and are looking for any opportunity to discredit the Jubilee government.

He noted that the Eurobond saga was one of the strategies they were using and now they are targeting the Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and Central Bank Governor Patrick Njoroge.

“Let them not turn heat on a junior person but instead concentrate on the real issues affecting Kenyans. They are using every opportunity to discredit the Government and I can assure them that they will not win this game,” said the DP.

During the function, some leaders endorsed Ruto as the Jubilee 2022 presidential candidate once President Kenyatta leaves power. “This is the way to go and we will not let you down. The Mt Kenya region has decided and we will vote for you come 2022,” said Mr Waiganjo.
