Driver dies as Baringo MP injured in road crash

Baringo Woman Representative Grace Kiptui Sunday sustained injuries in a road accident that left her driver dead. The accident occurred along the Loruk-Kambi ya Samaki road in Baringo County.

Baringo Central MP Sammy Mwaita said the woman representative was heading for the inauguration of the African Inland Church (AIC) bishop at Chemolingot. The accident occurred at around 11.30am.

Mr Mwaita said the function was also to be attended by Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi and Tiati MP Asman Kamama.

The MP's car burst its tyre and the driver lost control. The car then veered off the road and rolled.

"The woman representative was headed to a church function but a few kilometres to the venue, she was involved in a road accident that left her driver dead," said Mwaita, adding that the accident was self-involving and that the driver died on the spot.

Two other passengers including her personal assistant, Leonard Kulei, and her bodyguard escaped unhurt.

Ms Kiptui was rushed to Marigat District Hospital where she received first aid before being referred to Mediheal Hospital in Nakuru.

A nurse at the hospital said the MP suffered head injuries and slight injuries on several parts of her body.

The nurse said they did an ultrasound, x-ray and CT scan before referring her again to Nairobi Hospital for further examination and treatment.

"The patient sustained head injuries and she complained of very severe headache but her condition was managed before she was transferred to Nairobi," said the nurse.

Baringo South MP Grace Kipchoim said doctors at Nairobi Hospital had confirmed her condition was stable.

"Doctors at the hospital said the MP is out of danger. Others who escaped are in a good condition," said Kipchoim.
