Woman kills baby minutes after birth

Naivasha, Kenya: A woman strangled her newly born baby yesterday, a few minutes after giving birth. According to authorities, the woman committed the act with the help of a neighbour in Ndabibi.

The two conspired to commit the crime after the woman, who is a mother of two, reportedly said she was not ready to raise a third child.

Confirming the incident, Naivasha sub-county assistant Commissioner John Opondo said the two women had since been arrested and locked at Kongoni Police Station.

The officer, who visited the scene, said it was disturbing, adding the body of the minor had since been collected and taken to the local mortuary. Opondo said the minor was strangled using a piece of cloth. He added the suspects claimed the baby died during the birth process.

“They claim that they were using a piece of cloth to pull out the minor, who had gotten stuck during birth, when the incident occurred,” he said.

But Opondo said the story from the two suspects did not add up, noting the main suspect had in the past complained that she was uncomfortable with the pregnancy and wanted to get rid of it.

Elsewhere, a taxi driver was murdered and his vehicle stolen on Monday. His body was found dumped along the Mai Mahiu-Suswa road, a few kilometers from Mai Mahiu town.

 Tied Hands

The deceased, who used to operate in Limuru town, went missing on Sunday only for his half naked body to be found by herders in the bushes.

His hands were tied behind his back using a wire and there were indications that he was strangled.

According to police sources, the driver had been hired to ferry customers to Suswa to buy some goats when he was murdered. “The suspects who had hired him from Limuru town made away with his Probox vehicle after murdering and taking away his personal effects,” said a police officer.

A witness, Amos Kirusu, said some herders spotted the body and informed the police. “The hands were tied behind his back and he only had a short,” he said.

Naivasha OCPD Titus Munyoki confirmed the incident and said they had launched investigations though no arrest had been made.
