Police quarters or squatters?

These are not scenes from an abandoned IDP camp in the middle of nowhere. Instead, these houses in Nyeri give a glimpse of the inhumane conditions that police officers in the county live in.

As the insecurity within the larger Nyeri county continues to rise to unfathomable level by the day, and the blame being levelled upon the Police a lot also needs to be done as far as their welfare it concerned to enable them discharge their duties well but not when they stay in such shanties that were constructed by the colonialist over half a decade ago as stables.

Some of these nearly collapsed shanties have passed their ‘expiry’ date considering they were built by the colonial masters.

The houses are a stone’s throw away from a stalled Sh80 million housing project at the Katina Police Station in Mathira. We can only hope that the project will be finished to make the police quarters decent.
