Kenyans around the World on things that make a home

Home. It is a simple four-letter word. Yet a million different things come to mind when you really start to think about it.

At WorldRemit, the global money transfer app, we asked Kenyans around the world what home means to them. They sent us hundreds of answers, thoughts and photos – and we were amazed by the responses.

For some, home is about the daily routine of caring for one’s family.

In Mutaratara, just north of Nairobi, we spoke to Nelly Wanene. She lives with her granddaughter, and looks after a small piece of land there.

The 58 year-old farmer came to the village more than 25 years ago. She owns an acre of land, where she grows a variety of crops and raises chickens and pigs to sell at the market.

Maize, beans, potatoes, sukuma wiki, bananas Nelly grows just about everything in her allotment.

Her day starts at five in the morning - preparing breakfast on the wood-fired stove, feeding the pigs, cutting grass in the shamba, cooking lunch, and looking after the housework all before the children come back from school.

And yet, for Nelly, home is not just about the daily routine. It is about family:

“You know, we Africans, what we like most is our children. Not a house, not money, but I would like to stay with my children forever if it can happen”, Nelly says.

For Kenyans around the world, the most common idea connected to home - perhaps unsurprisingly - was family.

Whether it was family gatherings, spending time with grandparents or the children of the household – thinking of family seemed to conjure up the most vivid images of home.

Even a small selection of the photos sent to us says it all – the comfort and warmth of family:
